Growing Pains
Sorry about the outages on pages X and Z today. I love my job and everything, but sometimes being there gets in the way of things in little ways like today. You see, my boss Dick was taking some time off today, so I had a little extra time and thought I'd put a Google search thing on the website to make some extra money. Well, at work they've got all these restrictions on my computer and everything. It's ridiculous. I'm the friggin' president and they won't even let me play Solitaire. So I tried to use Internet Explorer as my FTP client to upload the pages because I can't install software and thus can't put in a regular FTP client, and when I tried to replace the file, it was able to delete the file okay, but not able to put the new one in. So I got stuck in a situation where the files were down and I didn't have the technology to put up replacements until I got home from work.
I'm not sure how many of you know this, but I don't actually own this site. My friend owns the whole domain, so that includes Retro Game Zone and Crazy Uncle George's A to Z of Hotties. So I E-mailed him the X and Z pages to put up while I was stuck at work, but his Hotmail messed around with the HTML files,
so the ones he put up had all the wrong file locations for images and links. And he had to go instead of fixing the problem, so that's why the X and Z pages looked so weird until I got back from work.
So you're probably wondering what that weird graph is. Well, our site has been taking off. That's a graph of our web traffic daily, and the far left was yesterday. November 24th we had 28 page requests, i.e. people loaded 28 HTML pages from our website. November 29th we had 2109 page requests, which is bigger by a factor of more than 75. With this new traffic, though, we had a potential problem: exceeding our bandwidth. It probably won't happen, but if it does, we'll have to move up from the $3.95 a month plan. And Retro Game Zone hasn't started paying that $3.95 a month back yet, so we needed to make that money, too. So we started putting in Google Ads, which has required some of my time, but has been well worth it. So far today we've made $3.09, so it's safe to say we'll make back the $3.95 a month we pay.
Anyway, I haven't really been updating Crazy Uncle George's much at all in the past few months, and part of it is dealing with stuff like the ads, but most of it is the fact that I do the programming for both Crazy Uncle George's A to Z of Hotties and Retro Game Zone. My friend was supposed to do his own programming for Retro Game Zone, but wasn't really getting around to it because he was so busy, so I stepped up and did it. And Retro Game Zone is beginning to grow into a halfway decent site, and once it reaches a comfortable level, I'll turn my attention back to Crazy Uncle George's again.
I probably should note, though, that the reason we're getting all this traffic is because I've been spending so much time submitting our site to places to get links. Google isn't really doing anything for us since we're so badly ranked, so I've been putting us into a lot of Bomis rings, and into the Links sections of the IMDB, and the latter just started paying off yesterday. So I still have a lot of submitting our site to do, but if you start to put up links to Crazy Uncle George's, then our rank in Google will start to climb and I'll be able to get back to updating the page. So start linking to us and I'll be able to start getting some mad hot pictures...
