Windows No More
Well, although we don't really use any sophisticated code (just JavaScript) on Crazy Uncle George's A to Z of Hotties, but I might need to start using some on Retro Game Zone. We were being hosted on a Windows server, and the only things we could put on there on our Economy plan were HTML and ASP. Now we switched to a Linux server for the same price, and this one
allows PHP instead of ASP and it might allow us to use CGI (I'm not sure if it's part of the Economy plan for Linux, but it certainly wasn't for Windows). You see, the problem here is that every time I put up a screenshot on Retro Game Zone, if I load the image itself in its own window (which I size for the image) it'll have the default margins for whatever browser you're using. So I currently create a separate HTML page for every individual screenshot whose sole purpose is to set the margins to zero (well, sole purpose apart from showing the image to which it corresponds). So I'm looking to create a page in some language that I can just have one of and it'll work for all the screenshots. For example, the filename would be screenshot.xxx (replace xxx with whatever extension works) and I would make a link to screenshot.xxx?image=thrillhouseisgay and it would come up with a page that shows thrillhouseisgay.jpg and sets the margins to 0. Now hopefully I can accomplish this with PHP or something else that can be hosted on this server, but I'm going to have to look up how later. If you know how to solve this problem, my E-mail address is on the new Contact Me page.
Anyway, the problem with this, though, is that when they switched us over to the Linux server, we lost all our precious server data about who's visiting the page, where they're coming from, what they're looking at, how many are coming each day, etc. I don't mean for individuals, because I'd have no idea who any of these individual IPs are and I wouldn't know them anyway so why should I care? But all the group statistics are great, and now they're all gone. To give you an idea of how late the switch was, we had served about 2800 distinct hosts between when we got the web space in August and when the server switched, and between when the server switched and the end of yesterday, we had only served 42. So the data I have is only for a small fraction of a day, which isn't good enough to keep me fascinated.
In the meantime, don't expect any updates (even fixes of little errors) until Sunday because I won't be back from Portland until Sunday morning. Feel free to E-mail me any problems and I'll get right on them once I get back. The only one who's going to be at his computer for this week is going to be Thrillhouse, and he wouldn't know where to start. Thrillhouse is the one who owns the page, but I'm better at coding. I need some in-flight entertainment, though, so hopefully they'll play some political stuff. I usually just want to find out how the Texans do when I listen to the radio, but today I was listening to John McCain and it was just so funny because he's such a tool. They're talking to him about all the dirty shit I pulled on him in the 2000 primaries, and he's still trying to kiss my ass and show support even when the other Republicans aren't (stupid low polls) because he'll lose his good guy John McCain image if he ever says anything remotely negative about anyone. Eh, maybe I'll give him my support anyway if he runs in 2008... and then I'll find some way to stab him in the back...
